Eligibility
To be eligible for hospice, the patient must be certified by their attending physician and the hospice medical director to have an advanced illness with a life expectancy of six months or less if the disease runs its normal course. The patient must also consent in writing to choose palliative care rather than aggressive curative care for the terminal illness.
Patients derive the most benefit from hospice when they enroll as early as possible after diagnosis of the terminal condition. Early enrollment gives the attending physician and the hospice staff the best opportunity to successfully control pain and other symptoms that affect the patient's quality of life.
